Repair and Reuse - Organisations

£0.00

Repair & Reuse is one of only ten projects chosen by Love Essex county wide. Their aim is to reduce the textiles thrown away with household waste.

First, brief background info - I'm Vik (trading as Mae Kandoo).   Designer Maker, textiles artist and Creative Freelancer based in Brightlingsea.   Since 2012, I have led workshops and projects with community organisations across Tendring, Essex and further afield.  I am passionate about Creative Health for wellbeing.  My approach is rooted in protecting the environment which means climate conscious crafting.  The list of organisations I have worked with is extensive.  Below gives some indication of community engagement across Tendring.  A broader range and general info can be seen via https://www.maekandoo.co.uk

  • Fresh Air Festival of Outdoor Arts Winter Parade - Community Lanterns and giant Litter Bug

  • Essex and Suffolk Community Railway Partnership - Railway 200 Family Day Rag flags, Ticket bunting and community weaving wall.

  • Creative Net Workshops at Jaywick Martello Tower - community craft sessions egs.  Mixed medium collages, Dream catchers, paper Roses, artisan Remembrance Poppies, Nail & String art, Slow Stitching

  • Eco Youth Project - Harwich Arts and Community Centre

  • Inclusion Ventures - Craft sessions tailored for developmental needs e.g. limited fine motor skills young people aged 10 -19 years

  • Workshops for Theatre Temoin with Futures in Mind, Clacton.  Adults with mental health difficulties associated with Recovery.

  • 21st Century Heraldry” with local community groups & business owners, Tower of Strength Heritage Project

  • Brightlingsea Museum Crown Trail and Community workshops for Platinum Jubilee (4 Youth, B'sea Church  Lads and Girls Brigade, Age Well East Dementia support group)

As a volunteer & Director for The Bread and Roses Barge CIC, I have worked with groups including Next Chapter, Home Start.  I also run 1 to 1 and group Home Ed sessions for young people with SEND.

THE PROJECT - ‘Repair and Reuse’ was partially devised to address a gap in skills/service at Mending Matters CIC - the local eco-refill shop and Community repair hub.   Funding is providing access to opportunities that will equip people with repair skills (Sashiko and Visible Mending) and tools to use at home.  The Outhouse Youth group (supporting LGBTQ+ community)  and a community group from Mending Matters are involved.

Living locally I have an insight into challenges faced by vulnerable and marginalised people in the community and I am acutely aware of increased demands on lower budgets.    So - I decided to allocate some of the funding awarded to support organisations across Tendring.

THE WORKSHOP - Essentially, you will learn by doing! Expect an afternoon of mindfulness with like minded people.  Time to attend is time your organisation can invest in your wellbeing.  For FREE!  If you are an activities co-ordinator, Community Engagement Officer, Management Trainee or Volunteer Co-ordinator…here's a FEW benefits that can be gained through the Sashiko stitching session;  Learn a new skill - functional and artistic  × Improve wellbeing - meditative stitching focuses busy minds on the task in hand, improves self confidence and a sense of achievement  × Develop a strategy to supports people experiencing poverty - extending the life of clothes  × Integrate sustainability within your activity programme   × Potential for fundraising - eg making coasters/sashiko repair patches to sell   × Build organisational resilience - upskilling volunteer staff to run sashiko repair sessions  ×  Develop a strategy to reward/incentivize staff and volunteers - a wellbeing session / train or upskill   × Expert guidance, learning through experience with a model for delivery  × Boost ECO practice with access to resources about textile waste to scale up the project within your organisation   × Celebrate group achievements by opting in to a broader campaign…simply log the number of clothes repaired, feedback info every 3 months and I will do the rest.  (Think some sort of ‘ometer’   Visual with  number of items of clothing saved from waste …for each repair group and collectively)

IT IS FREE TO ATTEND , but you do need to register in advance.   I will contact you the week before with timings for the afternoon and other admin.    Please register interest by 17th May at 5pm.  I hope it's a full house and look foward to supporting what you do!
